Craft Skills vs. Process Skills When students make something like a solar powered model car, a PowerPoint, model of a monument to be proposed for a city park, a graphic design, an electronic composition of music, craft skills are necessary. A lack of craft skills is a barrier to the problem-solvers ability to carry out a plan resulting from problem solving. Teaching craft skills is too often neglected. Process skills refer to the skills used in a process such as finding and evaluating information during research, using a scientific method, using thumbnail sketches for brainstorming in visual art, engaging in a debate, etc. Craft and process skills are both needed in the overall processes of problem solving. Both types of skills must be modeled and taught.
